About the ASARI (UM6P Laâyoune):
The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). It is located in Foum El Oued/Laâyoune City and constitutes a structure of practical-based research with a vision of solving real Local, Regional, and African agriculture challenges leveraging up-to-date science and technology.
Oriented towards Africa, ASARI acts in connection with a wide network of universities and research centers around the continent in order to link real field issues with up-to-date science. The institute consists of a multidisciplinary team of agronomists, biochemists, molecular biologists, bioprocess specialists, animal scientist, etc to respond to regional challenges affecting marginal environments.
Context
The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Laâyoune, Morocco, is looking for an enthusiastic PhD student, preferably with a background in biotechnology, phytochemistry, and plant science. The purpose is to explore new biomolecules from native aromatic and medicinal plants of the south of Morocco, as well as to enhance their contents using advanced biotechnology tools.
Research Objectives
• Valorize the aromatic and medicinal plants of the south of Morocco.
• Study the biochemical mechanisms involved in the biosynthesis pathways of bioactive molecules, as well as the factors linked to their stimulation.
• Evaluate the cosmetic and pharmacological properties.
• Explore new bioactive ingredients with high economic value.
Key duties:
The successful candidate is expected to:
• Elaborate an original research methodology and set up experimental designs.
• Carry out laboratory and field trials.
• Conduct the in vitro culture of aromatic and medicinal plants of the south of Morocco.
• Explore new scenarios for the optimization of biomolecules using advanced tools.
• Contribute to the chemical analysis and characterization.
• Evaluate the biological activities.
• Publish in well-ranked and high-impact peer-reviewed journals in the field.
• Co-supervise Master students as well as interns.
• Conduct research as part of the project team.
Admission Criteria:
• Applicants must have a degree in Engineering or Master’s (or equivalent) in Phytochemistry/Analytical Chemistry, Natural Product Chemistry, Pharmacology, Plant science, Biotechnology, or relevant fields.
• Good knowledge in biochemistry and cell biology.
• Knowledge in advanced analytical chemistry tools: GC-MS, CCM, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, etc.
• Excellent knowledge in English and French
• Good knowledge in Plant Tissue Culture / Metabolic engineering.
• Experience in statistical analysis and academic writing (Data analysis and interpretation).
• High motivation, teamwork capabilities, and communication skills
• Submission of references from academic or professional contacts who can attest to the candidate's qualifications and suitability for the position.
